While these sectors contribute to development, they are heavily reliant on external factors, such as international investments, market conditions, and geopolitical stability. This dependency limits their ability to ensure Nepal’s long-term independence and self-reliance.
In contrast, agriculture is a sector that Nepal can fully control and develop from within. It has the potential to make the country self-sufficient, reduce dependency on imports, and generate substantial employment opportunities.

The Current Perception of Agriculture
One of the significant challenges in transforming Nepal’s agricultural sector is the prevailing perception that agriculture is a sector of punishment—a fallback for those with no other options. This negative view has led many, especially the youth, to abandon farming and seek employment abroad in countries like the Gulf states, South Korea, Malaysia, and Europe. This trend has resulted in vast tracts of fertile land being left unproductive, further exacerbating the challenges in the agricultural sector.
